Implied Consent to Participate in a Research Study

Salary Prediction Task

A. Purpose and Procedures

The purpose of this research study is to better understand the relationship between people's financial choices and their income. This study has been reviewed and approved by the Temple University Institutional Review Board, approval #XXX. If you agree to participate in this research study, we will ask you to do the following: (1) Choose which of two rewards, presented at different points in time, you would prefer. You will do this several times until we can compute a single value for you. (2) Answer some questions about your preferences as well as questions about what you are like (age, gender, etc.). We estimate that all of this will take 5-10 minutes depending on your speed. At the end of the study, we will let you know all the details about what we are studying and how your data contributes to the process.

B. Risks and Confidentiality

There are no risks associated with participating in this study. All of your responses will be kept private and secured in a password protected computer file and undisclosed to persons outside of the research other than the researchers that are part of this study. You do not need to give any identifying information such as your name or email address to participate in this study. IP addresses are routinely recorded, but are completely confidential. Research designs often require that the full intent of the study not be explained prior to participation. When the study is completed, you will receive a full debriefing on the purpose and the procedures of the research. You have the right to end the study at anytime. All of your responses will be anonymous. All the data collected will be for research purpose only. Data will not be accessed by anyone else other than the researchers themselves.

C. Costs/Benefits

There will be no cost to you or direct benefits to you for participating in this research. Some people may feel good that they helped the scientific enterprise. D. Keep in mind that our salary estimate is generated by a computer and is based on averages. You could be different than the average and make more/less than the machine predicts! As we get more data, our salary estimations will become more accurate, however even then, there are always outliers.
